Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe,
A.J.Arberry 68:1
2
thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed.
A.J.Arberry 68:2
3
Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing;
A.J.Arberry 68:3
4
surely thou art upon a mighty morality.
A.J.Arberry 68:4
5
So thou shalt see, and they will see,
A.J.Arberry 68:5
6
which of you is the demented.
A.J.Arberry 68:6
7
Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided.
A.J.Arberry 68:7
8
So obey thou not those who cry lies.
A.J.Arberry 68:8
9
They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise.
A.J.Arberry 68:9
10
And obey thou not every mean swearer,
A.J.Arberry 68:10
11
backbiter, going about with slander,
A.J.Arberry 68:11
12
hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained,
A.J.Arberry 68:12
13
moreover ignoble,
A.J.Arberry 68:13
14
because he has wealth and sons.
A.J.Arberry 68:14
15
When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!'
A.J.Arberry 68:15
16
We shall brand him upon the muzzle!
A.J.Arberry 68:16
17
Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning
A.J.Arberry 68:17
18
and they added not the saving words.
A.J.Arberry 68:18
19
Then a visitation from thy Lord visited it, while they were sleeping,
A.J.Arberry 68:19
20
and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked.
A.J.Arberry 68:20
21
In the morning they called to one another,
A.J.Arberry 68:21
22
'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!'
A.J.Arberry 68:22
23
So they departed, whispering together,
A.J.Arberry 68:23
24
'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.'
A.J.Arberry 68:24
25
And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose.
A.J.Arberry 68:25
26
But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray;
A.J.Arberry 68:26
27
nay, rather we have been robbed!'
A.J.Arberry 68:27
28
Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"'
A.J.Arberry 68:28
29
They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.'
A.J.Arberry 68:29
30
And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other.
A.J.Arberry 68:30
